Lesson #35: Unless the room is on fire, turns are more important than doors!

This is one of our most important lessons – that’s why we put it on the back of our business cards. Brands often get overly excited about the opportunity to expand their product into new stores as quickly as possible (understandably so!). Unfortunately, there’s almost nothing worse than getting over-extended and under-supporting products on the shelf – that can ruin relationships with retailers and make it incredibly challenging to change the established reputation of the brand!

In this session, we’ll explain the importance of “turns”, aka velocity (units/store/week). More specifically, why it’s a key to sustainable brand growth, how to understand it using data & segmentation, how to use it as an indicator for successful SKUs & under-performing SKUs, and ultimately use it as a selling tool.

Who Should Attend:

  • Emerging brands looking to responsibly grow their brand.
  • Launch or pre-launch brands looking to prepare for having their product on the shelf.

Outline of the Day:

  • Demonstrating importance and impact of managing velocity.
  • Analyzing product categories and the underlying segments for velocity thresholds.
  • Measuring performance and gathering additional qualitative feedback.
  • Developing a promotional strategy to continue the success of high-performing SKUs and to boost SKUs lagging behind thresholds.
  • Communicating this strategy effectively to retailers.

Sample Itinerary

The Night Before, 6 PM to 8 PM: An informal gathering to meet the rest of the participants – happy hour, dinner. All totally optional, but we think it’s important to have as many opportunities to get to know your peers.

The Workshop Day, 9 AM – 12 PM: The important stuff. Hear from our team of experienced advisors about the best practices for the topic at hand.

1 PM – 4 PM: Time to put the morning’s learnings into context. Hear from members of the industry who have lived & breathed the topic we’re discussing. You can expect case studies, presentations, panels, or Q&A’s, all with the intention of providing an opportunity to learn from their successes and failures.

4 PM – 6 PM: We think it’s important to balance work with the other aspects of life. That’s why we end a day of sitting & learning with something a bit more fun & active. What exactly that is depends on our location & group size, but consider it a time to reflect on the day, where to go next, or simply enjoy the company of your peers.
